Wellness Article: Emotional Wellness

Emotional wellness refers to the awareness and understanding a person has about their emotions and how well they are able to manage them through different life events. Not having control over your emotional health can affect your relationships, your job, and your overall mental and physical health. Physical issues could include high blood pressure or a weakened immune system that could affect you for the rest of your life.

Causes of emotional stress can be affected by challenges with work, school, relationships, or home life. It also includes things like changes in health, retirement (which can be caused by losing a sense of purpose,) losing loved ones, or moving away from home into the real world. Here are some tips and tricks to improve your emotional wellness in your day-to-day life:

  1. Being Mindful and Take Action:

Taking deep breaths and taking a minute to pause and reflect can help you to stay centered and live the moment. If you are going through a difficult time, taking time to think about life and what you can do to better it, as well as possibly taking it out, can really help you manage stress within your emotions.

  1. Do a Body Scan:

Mentally scan through your body from head to toe and bring awareness to how each part of your body feels. While you are taking your deep breaths feel every part of your body relax and let it tell you how it is feeling and what needs to be taken care of.

  1. Try to Have a Positive Mind-Set:

Sometimes it is hard to keep positive, especially with so much bad news happening in the world right now. Ways to keep positive should focus on forgiveness of oneself, spending time with positive people, and taking care of your physical and mental health.
