Social Wellness:

Why is social wellness important?

Maintaining relationships and social contact with others helps to build healthy relationships and connections with others. Having a healthy social network of people in your life can be great for developing crucial social skills and becoming more comfortable with certain social situations. Surrounding yourself with a positive environment can also build up your self-esteem and help you to create communication, trust, and conflict management. Having a social circle and social wellness can also increase your mental and physical health as well.

Suggestions on building on your social wellness:

  • Reflect on yourself and your social needs: It’s okay to be alone once and a while. Knowing your mental and physical health and knowing when you are up to socializing is up to you. Getting to know when you are ready for that is a way to have a healthy balance of both interaction and alone time.
  • Make an effort to stay in touch with family and friends: Keeping contact with loved ones is a great way to boost serotonin and your overall health. Family and friends are there to support you, they love you, and always want what is best for you.
  • Participate in more social activities and conversations: The more that you participate in certain activities the more that you can boost your overall social wellness. While taking time for yourself is always needed, make sure that you also spend time getting to know people as well as yourself and your needs.

Resident Profile

Resident Profile: Bob Dargiewicz

Bob Dargiewicz is a brother, a son, an Uncle, and a Great-Uncle. At 77 years old, Bob has lived a wonderful and fulfilling life to this day. His sarcasm and humor are the best part about him, he knows just when to lighten a situation and not take himself too seriously. If you happen to walk by room 203, stop by and say hi, most of the time he is always willing to talk and crack a joke with you.

There is a lot to say about who Bob is. He is kind, warmhearted, and has a sense of humor that can bring you out of any mood. During holidays instead of hanging out with the adults, Bob would come to the playroom where the children would be playing with dolls, and make them have funny voices.

There will never be a day when Bob isn’t warm and welcoming, even when he isn’t in the best of moods. His life hasn’t been easy, losing his father at 3 years old was a massive change in his life. His brother took over as the man of the house (as he was 13 years older than Bob,) and he looked up to his big brother in many ways.

Family is very important to Bob and if you take the time to get to know him, you could see just how kind and caring he can be to the people he cares about the most.

Father’s Day | May 2022

Father’s Day 2022

The Nation’s first Father’s day was celebrated on June 19th, 1910 in the state of Washington. It wasn’t until the year 1972, 58 years after Mother’s Day became an official holiday, that Father’s day became a holiday in the U.S. This year, 2022, father’s day falls on Sunday, June 19th as it does every year.

The Campaign for father’s day was not met with the same enthusiasm as the idea of Mother’s day was. Perhaps because back then fathers might not have had the same sentimental appeal to the date as mothers had for Mother’s Day.

On July 5 of 1908, a West Virginia church sponsored the United States’ first event that honored fathers. A Sunday sermon in memory of 362 men who had died in the previous December’s explosions at the Fairmount Coal Company mines in Monongah. Though this was a one-time celebrated occasion and not an annual holiday like Father’s day would become.

In the next year, a woman in Washington named Sonora Smart Dodd tried to establish a Mother’s day holiday but for men. It stuck and Washington State celebrated the first Father’s day in the year 1910.

The holiday spread and in 1916, President Wilson honored the day by using telegraph signals to unfurl a flag in Spokane when he pressed a button in Washington D.C. In 1924, president Calvin Coolidge urged state governments to observe Father’s Day.

Today the day that honors fathers falls on the third Sunday of June in the United States. In other countries, especially in Europe and Latin America, fathers are honored on St. Joseph’s Day, a traditional Catholic holiday that falls on March 19th.

Although Father’s Day is a good day to celebrate the love that children have for their fathers, there is some controversy that has been attached to the holiday. We at RiverCourt wish all the fathers a happy Father’s Day.
